This is why I dislike it when people do not leave reviews.

Someone rated chapter 9 of "Hold Your Light" as OOC (out of character) on Ficwad.com.  None of the other chapters were rated negatively and no reviews were left, so that makes me wonder just who they thought was and why were they OOC.  If you're not familiar with the site, you get a certain number of rating points when you join and as you rate other stories, have people rate your stories, or meta-rate your ratings, you get more points.  Each positive rating gives a story a +1 and each negative rating a -1.  There is a filter you can set so that you can only view stories with a certain rating and higher.  Therefore, you can pretty much eliminate seeing poorly rated stories.

So, to help my confusion, I re-read chapter 9.  The chapter opens with Duo watching over a sleeping Trowa and reflecting on how much he does or doesn't know the other man.  He sees the picture of Trowa and Catherine taken at the circus and begins to piece together that the Trowa he knew after the wars and the aTrowa he met after he joined the Preventers, are different.  Before he has time to fully contemplate this, Trowa wakes up.  The two head downstairs to eat dinner with Heero and Duo brings up the well-intentioned, but poorly thought out idea of them sleeping in the same room as Trowa to help ease his nightmares.  Trowa flips out on the two of them and rants about not needing a babysitter and then lashes out at Heero for divulging the fact that he'd been raped before to Duo.   This sends Trowa spiraling into a panic attack which is where the chapter ends.  So, who was OOC?  Duo because he wants to help and doesn't know how?  Heero, for the same reason?  Or maybe Trowa for breaking down because for fucks sake, he's not a machine?  *deep breath*

I'll be the first one to admit that these earlier chapters are a bit rusty.  I was still getting the feel of the characters in the context of this story, but OOC? Debatable.  I just wish that person would have dropped a line to say "Hey, I thought Heero was a little off.  I think he's being too open with his feelings."  Something...anything, would do.  Constructive criticism is essential to writers and I wish more people would do it.  I can understand why people might be scared to do so seeing as how many immature people out there can't handle it.  I love hearing from the people who like it, but I also need to hear from the people who think that something can be better.   Perhaps this is review karma sneaking up on me.  I need to be a better reviewer.

Oh, and I got nominated for employee of the month again.  Still no win, but another pretty balloon.  Maybe no one will steal this one....  Anyway, here it is

I know what you mean. I've gotten a few "this sucks" reviews and I'm like..ok, exactly what about it sucked? Can you elaborate? Those types of reviews just chafe my hide. I haven't gotten any reviews on ficwad for what I've posted there either, except for one total review that simply said something like please continue. I'm not sure if there are very many that frequent that site. *shrugs*

On the flip side, I understand why some wouldn't want to leave a piece of constructive criticism. I did once for a very well written story by a popular author in another fandom when one of her chapters made the characters totally change personalities from the way they were portrayed in the previous chapters. I politely pointed out the abrupt change in character and recited some examples as proof using some of her own descriptions from previous chapters, all the while telling her how well written I thought the story was otherwise. She and her 'followers' proceeded to cut me to ribbons in her livejournal. Since then, I don't say anything other than how much I'm enjoying the story.

Yeah, the reviews at ficwad are pretty scarce. I like the rating system, but one of the major pitfalls of it is instances like this one. Someone can simply give a negative rating without having to state why.

I really wish that people could take concrit better. They're ruining it for everyone else and missing the helpful suggestions being offered. A few experiences like yours and people get discouraged. I've never received a "This sucks" review on any story, but one story did drum up enough controversy to start a thread of hate on a forum. That whole ordeal was too crazy to believe, but not one of the people on that thread ever left a review stating any of the opinions from that forum. I really is sad that a few bad apples have ruined things for those who legitimately want helpful suggestions.

Somehow... I don't think either of us are willing enough to ever forget that event... I still have some hatred for that forum, I guess.

Wait... on ficwad, is there some sort of "only registered users can review" or something like that?
evilkat_meowevilkat_meow on November 8th, 2006 12:51 am (UTC)
Anyone can leave a review on ficwad, but you need to be registered to be involved in the story rating thing.

And no, I'll never forget the great "P&C" incident. I still can't believe my little story got people that riled up. Whatever...any publicity is good publicity, I guess.

Well... they were bullying people... and yeah, I guess felt the need to eventually do something about it. I mean... I'm some sort of magnet for bullies in RL I guess, so I just couldn't stand to see that enacted on the net... somehow, I don't think they learned at all or have forgotten that anybody would feel bad from having the same done to them. I mean, I used the same tactics they used, and I'm sure I hurt them enough to make them realize.
I think I might've been wrong on that.

Blah, been having a bipolar day. Happy for a sec, bitchy and pissed the next... pssssssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhh...

You think the person who rated your fic was just some random passerby... or do you think it's one of them, still not content with troublemaking?
evilkat_meowevilkat_meow on November 8th, 2006 01:12 am (UTC)
Nah, I don't think it was any of them unless they've switched over to Gundam Wing. It was just some random person. he more I think about it, it's possible that the person gave up reading at chapter 9 and thinks the whole story is OOC, but only rated that one chapter. I guess I'll never know.

As for the people at Harry's, I don't give two shits about what they say about me or my story any more. My only gripe is that they should make it a closed forum where you have to register to view the entries. That way, someone like me, who was just a fan looking for WHR stuff, doesn't stumble across a thread saying some pretty mean spirited things about them and their story. That's just bad form IMHO.
thrull_o_ha_desthrull_o_ha_des on November 8th, 2006 01:33 am (UTC)
Heh... ignorance... bullies... amusement... I don't understand why they have to have to be so damn hurtful when they spew their venom. I don't understand that in bullies at all.
I mean, sure, I make fun of people, but not to the degree that I'll make a forum dedicated to humiliating random people... I'd only do it to humiliate the haters. beating the brutalizer.

Somehow... I don't think any of them ever realized that one saying, "If you can't say anything good, then don't say it at all."

And yeah, I guess I am concrete on my hatred for bullies... it's kinda pathetic to have realized I might have had turned into one myself when all that shit went down.

But still... I don't think even the kindest words from any of them, even Zurizip, could ever truely end my anger for them unless they truely give up this quest for "ridding the world of bad fic". I mean, the recently talked of flaming more fics, showing that they didn't learn too much. Even if they're doing it on a closed forum, they've still got someone watching them.
Well, I had to let that out, eh? ^_^

About the ch 9 rater... you're prolly right. Unless... someone you know personally was trying to play a stoopid joke.

I think it's someone who didn't get nominated for employee of the month. (Quickly! Out w/ the stun gun! XD)

Blanket Review for you
Hi! Just got bored and managed to read all your GW (and your one 00) fics on aff.net, and while I'm not usually a 2x3 fan you make it work quite convincingly. ^_^ That being said, I know it's been many a year since you've touched on your unfinished fics, but I thought you'd be happy to know you're still gaining new readers, so if you wanted to dust off "Light" and maybe "Unicorn", new chapters would definately not go unappreciated.

Also, in general, sometimes I see feedback for fics that call charaters OOC if any relationship is formed that isn't cannon in the series (so that's like, what, 99.8% of yaoi in general?) so sometimes you just have to sigh and accept that some people are just plain dumb. (Hence why I'm a geologist - if a rock pisses me off I can kick it and the only complaint I'll get is my sore toe. ^_^)

I know I'm commenting on like a 6 year old post, but it seemed the most appropriate one to send my message to.

Thanks for writing fics!!

Re: Blanket Review for you
I am so sorry for just getting around to responding to you. Thank you so much for not only reading my stuff, but taking the time to let me know what you thought.

I really do want to start working on "Light" again. I think about that story constantly and miss the boys so much. I doubt they miss me though...I've put them through the proverbial wringer. Fear not, I will get back to it some time soon...hopefully. My son is older now and doesn't need the constant supervision, so maybe mom can sneak away to write some boy-porn. ;) Thanks again!
